McLaren Central Michigan

President and CEO:
William Lawrence

HCECM Board: Trustee

Location: 1221 South Drive, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858

County: Isabella

Facility Description: 118 Inpatient Acute Care Beds

Type: Acute Care

Community Impact: Employs over 700. Provided healthcare services to over 42,000 in the past year. Over 180 volunteers donated $89,000 worth of support last year.

Sketch: In 2009 and 2011, McLaren Central Michigan was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals by Thomson Reuters. The nonprofit hospital was chosen for the honor among nearly 3,000 hospitals in the U.S. Recently, it unveiled a new, ultra-short open bore MRI which provides more precise diagnoses and timelier, more accurate treatment decisions between doctors and patients with a larger opening and much less noise. The hospital is a subsidiary of McLaren Health Care Corporation, which includes 11 hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, imaging centers, Michigan's only proton therapy center, an employed primary care physician network, commercial and Medicaid HMOs, home health care and hospice, medical equipment, retail pharmacy services and a fully-owned malpractice insurance company. McLaren Health Care recently partnered with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, one of only two National Cancer Institute designated centers in the state, to create the largest cancer research and provider network in Michigan. McLaren Central Michigan will play an instrumental role in this new partnership. McLaren Central Michigan originally opened in 1943 with 60 patient beds and 25 members on the medical staff.

Recent Accomplishments:

     - McLaren Central Michigan was honored in May 2014 with two Governor’s Awards of Excellence. The first award was for improving “Patient Care and Quality of Care in the Acute Care Hospital Setting” recognizing the hospital’s performance in clinical and patient experience measures and the completion of a   process improvement plan. The second award was for “Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention” and was based on the hospital’s infection performance, antimicrobial stewardship and completion of a process improvement plan.

     - McLaren Central Michigan was recognized with an “A” Hospital Safety ScoreSM, the highest score possible, by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national non-profit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, in their Fall 2013 report.

     - In 2012, the Norval K. Morey Cancer Center at McLaren Central Michigan earned the prestigious, three-year “Accreditation with Commendation” from the Commission on Cancer, a division of the American College of Surgeons. Fewer than 30 percent of U.S. hospitals are accredited.

     - The Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) awarded McLaren Central Michigan President and CEO Bill Lawrence with the 2012 MHA Health Care Leadership Award. MHA honors outstanding individuals who have provided exceptional leadership to healthcare organizations and to the health and well-being of the community.

     - McLaren Central Michigan was named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare, in 2011 and 2009.
