Extraordinary Nurse Recognized at Marlette Regional Hospital

Marlette, Michigan – Rebecca Cox, RN (Becky) of Marlette Regional Hospital (MRH) was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Becky was nominated by three different patients, Becky’s patients nominated her because they feel that she is genuinely kind, patient, a blessing that she is attentive to their needs, especially to those needs they didn’t communicate, and she just knows what is needed and when it is needed. Patients feel that Becky is a great communicator by letting them know exactly what is going to happen next, this makes them feel less anxious, confident in our skills and safe. Through the patient’s eyes, Becky is seen as a breath of fresh air. Her patients feel that she treats them with respect and kindness. To one of the patient nominators, Becky gave them the impression that she went into the field of nursing because she simply cares about people and wants to see them through health challenges. Lastly and most profoundly one patient said, “Becky treated me like a person…worthy of dignity and not a chart…not a number… or a job.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, Doctor of Humane Letters (h.c) and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation said, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Marlette Regional Hospital are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Chief Nursing Officer Hilda Hebberd RN, BSN, MSN said “I couldn’t be happier and more proud of Becky, her nominations really captured how special she is and what she means to our patients and to her co-workers. Hearing and seeing the kind words from patients about nurses and how this impacts them really makes being a nurse meaningful.”

In addition to the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, the Foundation expresses gratitude to the nursing profession internationally in over 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing with recognition of Nurse-led Teams, Nurse Leaders, Nurses Advancing Health Equity, Nursing Faculty, Nursing Students, Lifetime Achievement in Nursing, and through the J. Patrick Barnes Grants for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Medical Mission Grants and their new Health Equity Grant programs.
